Dental Emergencies: Suggested Courses of Action

Experiencing a dental emergency can be difficult, either for you or for your child. Knowing what to do to help yourself or your child is very important. In all cases, visit our dentist as soon as possible. However, there are a few things that you can do to minimize the damage before you come in.

Toothache
To find relief from a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and then floss the area carefully to remove any trapped food. Do not apply aspirin to the area, as this can irritate the gums. Come to our office as soon as possible.

Chipped Tooth
For a chipped tooth, rinse out your mouth with warm water. Keep the tooth fragments to bring to our office. Then, you can apply a cold compress to the face to lessen any swelling. Come to our office to see Dr. [doctor_name] immediately.

Knocked-Out Tooth
If you lose a tooth because of a blow to the face or another issue, carefully rinse the tooth with water while holding the tooth by the crown. Do not scrub the tooth or remove any tissue fragments. Then try to place the tooth back into its socket very gently. If your tooth will not reinsert easily, store the tooth in a cold cup of milk or water or place it between your cheek and gums and bring it to our office as soon as you can. If you experience any swelling, use a cold compress for relief.
