The Benefits Of General Dentistry
General dentistry includes a lot of things, but the foundation is basic care.
During a professional cleaning, a member of our team will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. Your teeth will be polished as well to clean them and to remove surface stains.
(For an even whiter smile, professional teeth whitening can remove deeper stains that may have taken several years to develop.)
During your visit, we also will perform a thorough examination. Our dental professional will check for symptoms of gum disease. We will watch for signs of cavities forming. We also will use the DIAGNOdent to detect tooth decay that isn’t visible to the naked eye.
Our hope is that you won’t have a cavity or gum disease, but we also know what the statistics say. More than 90 percent of people will have at least one cavity during their lives, and experts estimate that up to 80 percent of people may have gum disease at any given time.
By visiting Hampden Dental Care, you make it more likely that we will find decay or gum disease in the early stages. This is when your treatments are likely to be both less invasive and more effective.
Call 303-647-1907 to schedule your next check-up soon, especially if it’s been more than six months since your last professional dental cleaning.
Dealing With Cavities In General Dentistry
If you made a list of 10 people, more than likely nine of them have or will have a cavity in their lives. If you are one of the nine, then someday you will need a dental filling for your cavity.
While we offer metal fillings, our most popular option for this treatment is our tooth-colored fillings. These are made of a composite resin that matches and blends in with the rest of your smile.
In other words, you can have the benefits of a dental filling. You can fill in the hole (cavity) created by tooth decay to restore the shape and function of your tooth. You can protect your damaged tooth without a distracting metal filling in your smile.
Before you develop a cavity, however, we would encourage you to take advantage of two other treatments we offer at our dentist office in Lakewood, CO.
Fluoride treatments help in two ways. First, fluoride can repair minor damage to your enamel (the hard outer surface of your teeth). Second, fluoride can strengthen your enamel to help minimize the effect of bacteria on your teeth.
Dental sealants are a literal barrier that separates your most vulnerable teeth from the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Parents often get sealants for their children, but adults can get sealants as well.
Contact us if you have any questions about our fillings, sealants, fluoride treatments, or general dental services.
General Dentistry Starts At Home
We certainly hope that we will get to see you and yourself twice in the coming year. However, we also hope you will remain committed to a daily hygiene routine.
We also hope that you will follow the recommendations of the American Dental Association.
This starts by brushing your teeth on only sides by scrubbing for two minutes at a time. When you do this, remember to use a pea-sized squeeze of toothpaste with fluoride and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Doing this will remove many bacteria from your mouth, but there are things you can’t do by brushing alone such as cleaning between your teeth and gums.
To clean those spaces, you need to use an interdental cleaner. That includes dental floss, but you may prefer an interdental brush, a flosser, or a water flosser. If you either can’t or won’t use dental floss, please find a tool that works for you.
